ABB to Invest $130M in New Montreal R&D, Production Facility
ABB will invest more than $130 million in a new greenfield research and development and manufacturing project in Montreal, the company announced Tuesday.
The project will combine ABB’s existing Iberville, Que., and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu operations to expand production capacity.
“Our investment will support our future growth in Canada, as demand increases with customers focused on grid resilience, power distribution and renewables, and in new transportation, buildings and infrastructure projects,” said Khalid Mandri, president of ABB Installation Products. “The teams in our advanced new facility will deliver products and innovation that will help power businesses and homes across the country.
“Together with recent investments made in the U.S. and in Europe, the opening of this new facility will be a key part of our global growth strategy.”
The 340,000-square-foot facility—ABB’s largest single investment in Canada to date—will support more than 600 existing jobs, with new roles to be added as production grows to meet rising demand in utilities, renewables, transportation, and infrastructure sectors. Expected to open in mid-2027, the facility will feature energy-efficient systems designed to cut carbon emissions by about 95% compared to the current sites.
Headquartered in Switzerland, ABB is a global technology company specializing in electrification and automation products, including low-voltage and high-voltage systems and robotics. The firm employs approximately 110,000 people worldwide. Over the past decade, ABB has invested about US$275 million in Canada to advance local manufacturing and innovation capabilities.
