Altea Active to Move into Shuttered Cineplex Beaches Location

Altea Active is moving into the former Cineplex Cinemas Beaches space in Toronto’s Beaches district, according to multiple reports.

The theatre at 1651 Queen St. E. had its final day of operations on Feb. 17.

Lifestyle media outlet Curiocity reported that the luxury fitness and wellness brand plans to transform the former cinema into a two-floor, 59,000-square-foot fitness club combining elements of its AVANT concept and its Liberty Village location. The new facility will not include a pool.

The company’s CEO, Jeff York, told Curiocity the vision is to create a design that fits with the surrounding community while preserving aspects of the existing structure, including the atrium.

“We’re working with some really great professionals to put up a first-class facility,” York told his interviewer. “It’s not going to be this suburban type of concrete gym. It’ll be a little smaller than Liberty Village, but still a really good use of space.”

The new club is projected to open in 2028 and would mark another expansion for the brand, which also operates in Ottawa, Vancouver and Winnipeg.

York told Curiocity that the company is targeting at least five more neighbourhoods in Toronto but declined to disclose specific locations due to competition.
