Anthropic Lays Groundwork For Canadian Data Centre Buildout
Anthropic is laying the groundwork for a Canadian data centre buildout, with a second hiring notice pointing to Alberta as its first identifiable target market.
The developer of the Claude artificial intelligence models is recruiting a compute country lead to oversee “site selection, leasing, energy, financing, government relations and policy, community engagement, construction, and operations.”
The executive would “own the end-to-end strategy and coordination for Anthropic’s compute build-out in Canada” and be responsible for bringing gigawatts of computing capacity online.
Anthropic is also hiring a community engagement manager who must be based in Alberta or willing to relocate there. The employee would serve as the company’s presence in communities where its data centres are sited, built and operated, working with residents and officials from site selection through construction and operations.
The role covers town halls, planning hearings and concerns about power, water and land use.
The postings suggest Anthropic is at the earliest stage of developing its footprint. The company has not announced a project or committed to a municipality, site, investment or construction timeline.
Google and Microsoft already occupy Canadian data centres supporting cloud services in Montreal, Toronto and Quebec City.
