B.C. Government Aiming to Redevelop Burnaby Church

The B.C. government is seeking to redevelop a Burnaby church as a large mixed-used project that would include 432 rental-apartment units.

The province plans to develop a 45-storey tower through the new BC Builds program, which provides low-interest loans for builders to develop rental homes for middle-income individuals, families and seniors.

“Too many people are having a hard time finding a place to live they can afford – through BC Builds we’re taking action to fix that,” said Ravi Kahlon, the province’s housing minister, in a news release.

“We’re delivering more middle-class homes so the people who keep our communities working, like teachers, nurses and construction workers, can find a place to live they can afford in the communities they love.”

The Neighbourhood Church, formerly known as Southside Community Church, is located at 7135 Walker Avenue and 7244 Arcola Street. The province said a rezoning proposal is moving forward and details on the total project cost, BC Housing grants and BC Builds financing will be provided later.

The government is partnering with the church on the redevelopment project. Plans also call for the project to replace the church’s gathering space with a ministry hub program space, retail units and arts centre with a theatre for community concerts and performances.

Pending rezoning and financial approvals, construction is slatd to begin in late 2025.
