Burnaby Needs Another 22M-SF of Commercial Space: City Report

Burnaby needs 22.5 million square feet of additional commercial space to meet future demand, according to a new city report.

A needs assessment found that Vancouver’s closest suburb is expected to require 26% more employment space by 2050.

The highest demand will likely be in industrial, office and retail uses. Office and other commercial uses are expected to have the highest employment demand over the next 25 years.

Industrial uses currently have the highest built floor area and are expected to need about 8 msf of additional space by 2051.

Required square footage per worker is expected to decline by 2051 for most employment land classes, possibly leading to greater employee density per square foot, says the report.
