Cineplex Opens Rec Room at Former Vancouver Theatre Location
Cineplex has opened a new entertainment hub along downtown Vancouver’s theatre row on Granville Street.
The three-level Rec Room comprises 45,000 square feet in a former seven-screen Odeon movie theatre. The new venue has transformed a historic site into a dynamic destination for games, dining, and live performances, according to the company.
“Granville Street holds a legacy of its own, historically known for fun and entertainment in downtown Vancouver, so we’re excited to become part of this iconic street,” said Ellis Jacob, president and CEO of Toronto-based Cineplex. “As leaders in entertainment, we’re adding the element of play to the community, paired with live entertainment and delicious food and beverages. We look forward to welcoming guests and ushering in a new era on this reknown entertainment strip.”
The Rec Room blends the architectural history of the Palms Hotel and Coronet Theatre with modern design elements. Cineplex operated the Cineplex Odeon Granville 7, and earlier incarnations containing fewer screens, for decades at the site until 2005. The Rec Room Granville preserves the area’s legacy, incorporating features like the iconic Art Deco Dancer statue, inspired by the original architect’s performer wife.
Designed for all ages, the entertainment offerings include over 75 amusement games, augmented reality darts, axe throwing, mini-golf, pool tables, and a live-performance stage. The venue is also an employment generator, creating approximately 250 jobs for the local community, according to Cineplex.
Granville Street has witnessed a shift to live events from movies at long-time theatre locations.
The Rec Room’s eateries include a ground-floor restaurant featuring a 75-seat bar, a 160-seat dining area with an open kitchen, and sports-viewing options.
Signature dishes include jumbo wings and a decadent chocolate donut sundae. The Palms, a coastal-inspired bar on the lower level, serves tropical dishes such as spiced jackfruit tacos and ahi tuna nachos alongside handcrafted drinks.
The Shed, a quick-service spot on the second floor, delivers snacks like Buffalo chicken poutine and Korean corn dogs.
Cineplex is touting the Rec Room conceptas Canada’s premier eats and entertainment destination.
