Costco Buys 20 Acres To Anchor Stony Plain Power Centre

Costco has purchased 20 acres for a new warehouse that will anchor a power centre in Stony Plain, Alta., with the retailer targeting customers across west-central Alberta.

Hughes Commercial Realty Group announced the completed land sale for the site at Highway 16A and 28th Street, also known as Veterans Boulevard, west of Edmonton.

The planned Costco is expected to include a gas bar and a separate liquor store, along with about 1,000 parking spaces. Site servicing and preparation are underway ahead of a targeted summer 2027 opening.

Scott Hughes, broker and owner of Hughes Commercial Realty Group, said the store is positioned to draw customers from communities including Parkland County, Drayton Valley, Edson, Jasper, Whitecourt and Barrhead.

“Access was central to that decision, with connections from the Yellowhead Highway and Highway 16A positioning the site to serve both the immediate Stony Plain-Spruce Grove market and a much broader region,” Hughes told Connect.

The warehouse will anchor the broader Stony Plain Power Centre/Business Park, where Hughes is marketing additional retail and development opportunities.

“From a leasing perspective, Costco is a significant catalyst,” Hughes said. “It creates a regional shopping destination, drawing customers who can also support surrounding retailers, restaurants, hotels and recreational activities.”

The project adds to Costco’s Alberta expansion. New warehouses in northeast Edmonton and Lloydminster are scheduled to open in November, while another Costco is planned at Bingham Crossing northwest of Calgary.
