Construction has begun on a nearly 162,000-square-foot Costco warehouse in West St. Paul, Man., with the store targeting an August 2027 opening.

The warehouse is being built on a 21-acre site at 71 and 81 Meadowlands Dr., south of the Perimeter Highway and west of Main Street.

Plans include a seasonal garden centre, food court, tire centre and more than 1,000 parking spaces. It will be Costco’s first rural Manitoba warehouse and its first serving the north side of the Winnipeg metropolitan area.

The store will anchor Meadowlands, a 380-acre community planned by United Equities Group and Exemplar Developments. The project is expected to include 2,036 homes, commercial properties and a new kindergarten-to-Grade 8 school.

Costco operates 115 warehouses in Canada and has said it sees a strong path for expansion in the country over the next five years.

The retailer has at least 10 conventional Canadian warehouses under construction or in advanced planning, including projects in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Costco executives are targeting more than 30 net new warehouse openings annually worldwide in the coming years.
