JD Sports Opens Downtown Montreal Flagship

JD Sports has opened a Montreal flagship, taking about 9,400 square feet across the main floor and mezzanine at 777 Sainte-Catherine St. W.

The location at McGill College Avenue puts the retailer beside the Montreal Eaton Centre, near McGill University and transit. It carries footwear and apparel from brands Nike, Jordan, Adidas and New Balance in JD Sports’ black-and-yellow format.

The opening fills space occupied by Banana Republic, which closed in 2021. The two levels span 5,453 and 3,946 square feet, respectively.

Jordan Karp of Savills represented JD Sports in the lease. Karp and Manon Parisien of Aurora Retail Group co-listed the property for landlord Pontegadea.

The renovation has raised heritage concerns. Héritage Montréal says the former bank’s interior, which survived retail conversions including Banana Republic, was removed during the work.

The organization said Montreal officials had indicated in the 1990s that preserving the interior was a condition of the agreement permitting an office addition partly above the former bank. The Ville-Marie borough said the store was approved under current regulations and it could not locate records confirming that condition.

Héritage Montréal has asked the city’s heritage council to examine the case and recommend measures to protect significant commercial interiors.
