Jumbo Backfills 47K-SF Toys “R” Us Box For Canadian Debut

Greek value retailer Jumbo is taking over the former Toys “R” Us space at Vaughan Mills for its first Canadian store, filling a 47K-SF box vacated only months ago as the toy retailer restructured its Canadian operations.

Fox Group Jumbo Canada acquired the lease at 1 Bass Pro Mills Dr. through the court-supervised sale of Toys “R” Us Canada assets. An Ontario court approved the transaction in June and the deal closed in July.

The space, near Entrance 3 between HomeSense/Winners and Hockey Life, totals 47,042 SF on the Vaughan Mills lease plan. Toys “R” Us closed the location this summer.

Jumbo is expected to open in early 2027. The store will sell toys, seasonal products, home goods, baby products and other general merchandise as part of a broader Canadian expansion being led by Fox Group.

Fox had previously outlined plans for three Ontario stores before expanding to between five and 10 Canadian locations within its first three years, although no additional sites have been announced.

That makes Vaughan Mills the first test of a rollout that could create additional demand for large-format retail space, particularly as landlords look to backfill boxes left by restructuring and store closures.

Vaughan Mills is co-owned by Ivanhoé Cambridge and LaSalle Investment Management, with Ivanhoé continuing as asset manager. LaSalle acquired a 49% interest in the 1.5M-SF shopping centre in 2023.
