New 199-Unit Social Housing Project Opens in Gatineau
A new 199-unit social and affordable-housing development has officially opened in Gatineau, Que., backed by more than $82 million in government funding.
The project, known as Le Champlain, was delivered through a partnership involving the federal and Quebec governments, the City of Gatineau and Logir Outaouais, the real estate arm of the Office d’habitation de l’Outaouais, a non-profit housing organization that social and affordable housing in the area. The project will provide housing for families and individuals in need within the region.
According to a news release, federal support for the development totals about $38.7 million, provided through forgivable and low-interest loans under the Affordable Housing Fund. The Government of Quebec contributed over $36 million via the Société d’habitation du Québec’s Programme d’habitation abordable Québec, drawing on funding from the Canada-Quebec Agreement under the Housing Accelerator Fund and additional provincial investments announced in recent economic updates.
The City of Gatineau also supported the project, providing more than $7.3 million in funding.
