OCH Breaks Ground on Ottawa Affordable Housing Project
Ottawa Community Housing has broken ground on a new 336-unit affordable housing project adjacent to the city’s downtown core.
The project is part of a multi-phase development known as Gladstone Village. The site is adjacent to the Little Italy neighbourhood, and within walking distance of public transit.
OCH describes the project as “a forward-thinking approach to housing in Ottawa.”
Diamond Schmitt is designing the first phase in collaboration with KWC Architects. Pomerleau is serving as the general contractor.
“In designing the first phase of Gladstone Village, we wanted to envision a building that goes beyond the typical affordable housing typology, and that creates a real sense of community and belonging,” said Nigel Tai, Principal of Diamond Schmitt Architects, in a news release.
“We have designed the building to encourage interaction between residents through enhanced amenity spaces and outdoor terraces, while also establishing connections with the surrounding neighbourhood, and the upcoming LRT line.”
Stéphane Giguère, CEO of OCH, said the first phase will drive economic growth with an estimated $375 million impact and 1,800 new jobs.
Plans call for up to 1,100 new homes at the five-acre site within the next five years as funding allows. OCH said the development will adhere to Passive House standards and be district energy-ready.
Sustainable features will include high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, and wastewater heat recovery to demonstrate the group’s commitment to environmental responsibility and energy efficiency.
“The Gladstone Village development represents a significant milestone in Ottawa’s critical mission to expand affordable housing options,” said Mayor Mark Sutcliffe.
OCH owns and manages rental properties in which low and moderate-income individuals, families and seniors reside. The group is an arm’s-length organization owned by the city.
OCH operates as Arriv Properties.
