Tennis Québec is considering a waterfront site near Habitat 67 for a major public tennis complex, potentially bringing new life to underused Port of Montreal property near the downtown core.

The provincial sports organization is studying land along Pierre-Dupuy Avenue in Cité du Havre, La Presse reports. The prospective location had not been disclosed when Montreal’s executive committee conditionally endorsed Tennis Québec’s application for provincial funding on May 27.

Municipal support hinges on approval from the Ville-Marie borough and an agreement guaranteeing public access to the courts.

The project would introduce a year-round recreational use to a strategically placed but isolated stretch of the waterfront. Cité du Havre sits between Old Montreal and Parc Jean-Drapeau, where governments and major landowners are weighing the future of industrial and federally controlled properties.

A large tennis facility could generate regular foot traffic, improve connections to the river and serve as an anchor for further investment. It would also offer a new development path for land constrained by port operations and fragmented ownership.

The project’s size, cost and construction timeline have not been disclosed. It is also unclear how Tennis Québec would secure the site.
