Tigerbay Files Plans For Britannia Beach Surf Park
Tigerbay Development has submitted plans for a seven-acre artificial surf park that will anchor a 1,050-home master-planned community along British Columbia’s Sea-to-Sky Corridor.
The proposed Wavegarden facility at South Britannia is expected to become Canada’s first full-sized artificial surf park. It would produce as many as 1,000 waves per hour, offering conditions for beginners through experienced surfers.
The development permit application also covers a 2,800-square-metre hub building with a surf academy, café, bar, restaurant and retail space, along with a 700-square-metre outdoor deck.
Surf cabins, wellness facilities and workforce accommodation are expected to follow through a supplementary development permit, completing the first phase of the project.
The surf park is planned as the recreational and tourism anchor for a 132-acre community on a former quarry south of Britannia Beach, about 14 kilometres south of Squamish.
The wider South Britannia master plan calls for 1,050 homes, including 900 market residences and 150 rental and affordable apartments. Plans also include tourism accommodation, neighbourhood retail, childcare space, a pump track, a skate park and potential sites for a school or community centre.
A network of parks and trails would connect the community, while the 12.8-acre Minaty Bay property is slated to become a publicly accessible waterfront park.
Tigerbay is working with Placemark Design + Development on the community plan. MGA is the architect of record for the surf-park phase, while Stantec is serving as engineer of record for the lagoon.
Construction costs and timelines have not been disclosed.
