New Affordable Housing Project Officially Opens in Gatineau
A new 134-unit affordable housing development for low- and moderate-income families has officially opened in Gatineau, Que.
The project was backed by more than $50 million in funding from federal, provincial, municipal and private-sector partners.
The Habiter chez soi project, led by Logir Outaouais and managed by the Office d’habitation de l’Outaouais, offers one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Tenants have been moving into the building since March 1.
The $50.6-million project was financed through contributions from the governments of Canada and Quebec, which each invested more than $19 million. The City of Gatineau contributed $7.7 million, while the Fonds de solidarité FTQ provided a $3.6-million patient-capital loan. A mortgage loan completed the financing package.
The project was developed under the Fonds de solidarité FTQ–Québec Agreement and was supported through the Canada-Quebec Agreement under the Housing Accelerator Fund and matching provincial investments announced in Quebec’s 2023 and 2024 economic updates.
“[The official opening] shows that, by joining forces, we can deliver quality projects that meet real needs,” said Karine Boivin Roy, Quebec’s housing minister. “This building lives up to its name, Habiter chez soi — a home of your own. Now 134 low- and modest-income households can have a home of their own in a high-quality, safe and affordable living environment. This is an achievement we can all take great pride in.”
Federal Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said the completed project will provide families with a stable and safe place from which to look confidently toward the future.
“The Habiter chez soi project demonstrates what can be achieved when governments and community partners work together to address the challenges faced by many families in Gatineau,” said MacKinnon, who is the MP for Gatineau.
Of the 134 units, 99 are eligible for Quebec’s rent supplement program, which allows qualifying tenants to spend no more than 25% of their income on rent. Société d’habitation du Québec is providing 90% of the supplement funds, the city is supplying 10%.
The building includes 92 parking spaces, two elevators and universal accessibility features. Construction was carried out by Boless Inc., while architectural plans were designed by Pluriel.
