Feds Provide $53.4M in Funding for Deep Energy Retrofits at Vancouver Co-Op
The federal government is providing $53.4 million to support deep energy retrofits and climate-resilient upgrades at an east Vancouver co-operative housing complex.
The funding announcement was made by Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson alongside Laura Spiegel, president of the Adanac Housing Co-operative Society, at the co-op’s property at 950 Cassiar St.
The project involves a complete refurbishment of the co-op’s apartments and townhomes, including new siding, windows, doors, insulation, heat pumps and solar panels. Construction began in February 2026 and is expected to be completed by December 2028. The retrofit project is estimated to cost $42.8 million and is supported through the Affordable Housing Fund, the Canada Greener Affordable Housing program and the Affordable Housing Innovation Fund.
“Our government is committed to supporting communities and organizations like Adanac Co-operative Housing Society as they modernize aging homes, lower energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Every project like this helps create more affordable, sustainable homes and brings us one step closer to ensuring Canadians have access to housing they can afford,” said Robertson.
“With support from Canada Greener Affordable Housing Program (CGAH) and Affordable Housing Fund (AHF), the Adanac Housing Co-operative Society has been able to preserve our community of 160 households — comprised of low- and middle-income families, couples and seniors — rather than consider the upheaval and uncertainty of redevelopment,” said Spiegel.
According to the federal government, funding for the project includes $14.6 million through the Affordable Housing Fund and $27.2 million through the Canada Greener Affordable Housing program, along with $2 million in cash equity from the Adanac Co-operative Housing Society.
The Affordable Housing Innovation Fund also contributed financing for the project. The federal government said the investment supports its broader strategy to preserve affordable housing while improving energy efficiency and climate resilience in existing community housing.
The Affordable Housing Fund supports the construction, repair and renewal of affordable and community housing across Canada.
The Canada Greener Affordable Housing program provides financing for deep energy retrofits of affordable multi-unit residential buildings, while the Affordable Housing Innovation Fund supports projects using innovative financing models and construction approaches.
