Amazon Opens First Canadian XL Items Warehouse
Amazon has opened its first Canadian extra-large-items fulfillment centre in Calgary.
Named YYC6 Project Violin, the 1.2-million-square-foot facility is classified as an AMXL warehouse and handles barbecues, gym equipment and mattresses and other heavy, bulky products.
“YYC6 is Amazon’s second fulfillment centre in Calgary, where we also operate a sortation centre, AMXL delivery station and a delivery station,” an Amazon spokeswoman told Connect CRE.
According to a Government of Alberta data sheet, the distribution centre had an estimated cost of $131 million.
The City of Calgary listed the facility as its top second-quarter construction project, based on value, during the second quarter. The total almost doubled a $75-million Sofina poultry facility that ranked second.
Edmonton-based Clark Builders was the construction contractor. Beedie, a major Burnaby, B.C.-based development, investment and property management firm, developed the project.
The YYC6 development is located near a 2.6-million-square-foot Amazon warehouse known as YYC4 Project Maverick, a four-level facility located in the South Dufferin industrial park. According to the provincial government, Maverick had an estimated cost of $400 million.
