Anaergia, Capwatt Ink Deal for First of Nine Biogas Plants in Italy

Anaergia has signed a contract with Capwatt Biomethane Unipessoal to design and build a biomethane facility, named Metanext, in central Italy.

The project, worth approximately $7.3 million, is expected to be operational by June 2026. It marks the first initiative under a broader letter of intent signed in April. The partnership outlines plans for nine European biomethane plants deploying agro-industry waste.

“This contract marks an important milestone in our partnership with Capwatt, moving from the letter of intent to the launch of the first project,” said Assaf Onn, CEO of Anaergia. “Leveraging Anaergia’s technical expertise and equipment, we are well-positioned to deliver multiple projects simultaneously, meeting Capwatt’s requirements as proven in our previous collaborations.”Together, the projects are expected to generate about $60 million in revenue for Burlington, Ont.-based Anaergia over the next 30 months.

Anaergia will lead the design and construction of each facility, employing advanced technologies such as proprietary anaerobic digesters to support Europe’s transition to renewable energy and enhance green infrastructure.

“The Metanext facility will have the capacity to produce 7.6 million cubic metres of high-quality biomethane annually,” said Sérgio Rocha, CEO of Capwatt. “This is a significant step in fulfilling Capwatt’s commitment to sustainable energy production and supporting Europe’s energy transition.”
