ATB Financial Moving to Calgary’s Suncor Centre

ATB Financial will move into an improved Suncor Energy Centre in downtown Calgary in 2027

Brookfield Properties announced that ATB has agreed to lease 173,00 square feet in the reimagined campus and will open a retail branch connected to Plus-15 above-ground walkway system. Suncor Energy Centre contains two office towers comprising $1.7 million square feet.

The financial services company will be one of the newest tenants in the upgraded office tower, said Brookfield. By relocating and centralizing multiple locations into one, ATB will contribute to positive absorption downtown, Brookfield added.

“Our decision to establish a single, prominent corporate presence in Suncor Energy Centre demonstrates ATB’s long-term commitment to downtown Calgary,” says Krista Lauridsen, ATB’s head of real estate, facilities, design and construction.

“We view this as a strategic investment in a premier location that aligns us with the city’s future growth and positions our brand for maximum visibility in the evolving professional core.”

Brookfield Properties and ARCI, the building’s co-owners through a joint-venture, have invested about $90 million in upgrades that will feature an amphitheatre, food hall, restaurant, terrace, and gathering spaces.

In the summer of 2024, a historic bush plane that had been in the building’s atrium for 40 years was relocated to make way for the renovations.

“ATB’s dedication to Calgary and to the revitalization of its Downtown Core aligns with the vision of Brookfield Properties and ARCI,” said Michael Rix, vice-president of Western Canada for Brookfield Properties’ office business. “Our investment in Suncor Energy Centre to create a vibrant, community-centric campus is attracting leading firms like ATB that want to provide employees with an elevated workplace experience in the heart of our city.

“ATB will be an excellent addition to our office complex, and we look forward to welcoming them.”

The redesigned property’s new amphitheatre will have cascading seating for 300 people, nestled among greenery. The amphitheatre, in partnership with local arts and culture non-profits, will host year-round programming, such as film screenings, live music, art exhibitions, dance performances, wellness activities, workshops, pop-up markets, and lectures, Postmedia reported.

The food hall, open throughout the day and evening, will feature diverse culinary offerings and a full-service bar, providing a space for after-work socializing or enjoying performances. Visitors will also have access to a rooftop patio and outdoor lounge overlooking the city.

The project will transform the public areas between the SEC’s two iconic red granite towers, originally completed in 1984. According to KPMB Architects, one of the design firms involved, the redevelopment will create a vibrant, collaborative environment centred around a tree-filled “forum.” The multi-purpose atrium will incorporate forest-like settings and Indigenous design elements, offering a four-season space for informal gatherings and cultural events.

Enhanced connectivity will also be a priority, with reimagined tower entrances, a new south entrance, and centralized escalators creating seamless pathways through the complex, said KPMB. A mobility hub for cyclists will further promote healthy lifestyles and sustainable transportation.
