B.C. Purchases 14 Properties For MF Projects Near Future Surrey SkyTrain Station

The B.C. government has acquired14 properties for multi-family housing development near a future Surrey SkyTrain station.

The properties comprise four acres and will be used for the station site and other developments. The purchase price was not disclosed.

The 152 Street Station is to be located at 152nd Street and Fraser Highway along the future Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension. The province announced the purchases Thursday.

The government estimates that the project will deliver at least 700 homes, along with retail units, other commercial spaces, and childcare and educational services. In 2022, the province revised legislation that allows the government to purchase land for transit-oriented housing development projects.

“From the beginning of the Surrey Langley SkyTrain planning process, we recognized the tremendous potential to include housing and amenities for people near these station locations,” said Rob Fleming, the provincial transportation and infrastructure minister, in a news release.

“We made the necessary legislative changes so we could buy land to support transit-oriented developments along the route, and today’s announcement is the latest example of us delivering on that promise.”

The purchase of the Surrey properties is part of the government’s commitment to deliver as many as 10,000 homes near SkyTrain stations and other transit hubs over the next 10 to 15 years in support of the Homes for People plan. The government said it plans to support the development of housing around all eight future Surrey Langley SkyTrain Line stations.

In April, the province selected a four-company consortium to design and build the stations. In August, the province said the estimated cost had increased by $2 billion to about $6 billion from $4.01 billion.
