Bimbo Canada to Close Quebec City Bakery

Bimbo Canada has announced that it will close its bakery in Quebec City by year-end 2024.

Operations will wind down gradually as production shifts to other facilities, the company said in a news release.

Bimbo said said the decision is part of the company’s strategy to optimize its manufacturing footprint and enhance the efficiency of its bakery network for profitable growth.

“By consolidating and continuing to make significant investments in our operations, we will ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of our business,” said Marie-Ève Royer, president of Bimbo Canada. “It was a difficult decision, and I will personally ensure that we do everything possible to ease the impact on our people.”

The Quebec City bakery has approximately 141 employees. To support affected workers, Bimbo Canada will offer a period of working notice, along with severance packages, personal counselling, and outplacement services.

The shutdown will mark Bimbo’s second Quebec City-area plant closure this year. The company shuttered its facility in Lévis, Que., during the summer.

Bimbo is Canada’s largest baked-goods producer. The firm’s parent, Grupo Bimbo, is based in Mexico.
