Bird Secures $470M in Contracts Across Canada
Bird Construction has been awarded five major-project contracts with a combined value of approximately $470 million.
The projects span various sectors, including infrastructure, energy, industrial maintenance, and recreation, and will be delivered across multiple provinces.
“Bird continues to win work across our industrial, buildings and infrastructure businesses in key strategic market sectors that remain economically resilient, building on the company’s strong client relationships and forging new ones,” said Teri McKibbon, president & CEO of Toronto-based Bird.
“These awards highlight the scope of Bird’s capabilities, adding to the company’s combined backlog of nuclear, healthcare, horizontal infrastructure and industrial maintenance work, while expanding Bird’s expertise in collaborative contracts.”
Among the new awards, Bird will deliver its first project through an integrated project-delivery (IPD) model in Atlantic Canada. The contract, valued at approximately $70 million, involves constructing a 100,000-square foot combined office and maintenance depot. Designed to achieve zero carbon, the facility will be partially powered by a 260-kilowatt solar array, with plans to expand to 600 KW.
Bird, through its Indigenous-led Makhos Bird Joint-Venture (MBJV), has been awarded contracts for the design and construction of two buildings for Ontario Power Generation (OPG). The projects, worth approximately $120 million in total, will support OPG’s ongoing nuclear operations and refurbishment activities.
The company’s subsidiary, Jacob Bros Construction, has secured a $55-million contract for the Highway 1 bus-on-shoulder lanes project in B.C. The project will add nearly four kilometres of widened highway lanes between the McKenzie and Colwood interchanges, facilitating improved rapid-transit services, reducing congestion, and incorporating pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure.
Bird’s industrial maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) team has also secured two significant multi-year agreements worth approximately $100 million. One contract is a five-year master service agreement (MSA) renewal with a long-term client, expanding Bird’s self-perform general contracting services. The second award is a multi-discipline agreement with a blue-chip client in Eastern Canada.
The deal aligns with Bird’s strategic plan to expand into new regions and markets, said the company.
Additionally, Bird has completed the validation stage for an IPD project to redevelop a major recreation centre in Kelowna, B.C. The $125-million redevelopment will triple the facility’s available program space, increase athletic and aquatic facilities, and introduce dedicated childcare spaces.
Bird did not disclose the Kelowna facility’s name, but it is known to be the Parkinson Recreation Centre.
