Bloomsbury Offers Residential, Retail, Wellness Mix
Shannex has launched a new longevity-focused seniors lifestyle community in the Halifax region.
The company describes the project, known as Bloomsbury, as a pioneering community designed to promote a longevity-focused lifestyle. Bloomsbury is located in the Larry Uteck neighbourhood in Bedford, N.S. The area derives its name from a beloved late Canadian Football League player and university coach who grew up in the region.
Bloomsbury combines residential, retail, health, wellness, and dining amenities in a single community, featuring both public and members-only experiences.
“Bloomsbury aligns with Canada’s evolving demographics and the lifestyle priorities of Canadians,” said Jason Shannon, president of Shannex. “We’re seeing an increased focus and emphasis on longevity, where health span matches life span.”
Central to the community is Allbright Life, a newly conceived club and residential concept that serves as the heart of Bloomsbury. Exclusive to Allbright Life members will be a variety of offerings, including dining and entertainment venues, a co-working centre, event spaces, a library, gym, health centre, and a thermal spa.
Designed as an interconnected, walkable neighbourhood, Bloomsbury will feature outdoor spaces, cafes, restaurants, a local market, and wellness services open to the public. The development is tailored to meet a growing need for social connection and convenience, supported by curated amenities and intentional design.
“Well-designed, dynamic spaces are the silent heart of a lifestyle community,” said Vincent Van Den Brink, an architect who owns Halifax-based Breakhouse, which is designing the project. “Thoughtful design brings people together and allows the community’s unique spirit to thrive. This is what has driven our vision for Bloomsbury.”
According to Shannex, Bloomsbury was years in the making, developed in response to research highlighting a need for deeper social engagement among Canadians. Approximately 62% of Canadians report wanting more social interaction with family and friends, while nearly a quarter feel they spend too much time alone.
“Building wellness into the fabric of a community like we have with Bloomsbury will not only foster a culture of vitality and connection; it will transform neighbours into a community,” said Marc St-Onge, a health and wellness entrepreneur involved in the community’s development. “With built-in features, technology, and access to wellness professionals, people feel motivated, engaged, and connected to one another.”
The first phase of Bloomsbury is scheduled for completion in 2026.
