Calgary Apartment Unit Completions Rise 124% in Q2

Calgary apartment unit completions more than doubled during the second quarter.

The City of Calgary reported that 1,558 apartment suites were built during the period, marking a 124% increase from the second quarter of 2023.

Of the completed apartment buildings in the second quarter of 2024, six ranked among the highest valued construction projects of any type of completion. The six apartment buildings comprise 827 homes, said the city.

Altogether, builders completed 19 apartment buildings during the quarter, up from 12 a year earlier.

The strong growth in completed apartment units and buildings coincided with a sharp rise in residential development permit applications the number of residential development permits issued during the quarter.

Residential development permit applications increased 35% year-over-year to 3,613, while the number of development permits issues jumped 38% to 3,328.

“We are pleased to see continued investment from industry in Calgary’s residential building sector,” said Ulrik Seward, the city’s chief building official, in a news release. “The numbers show that the development industry is creating a variety of housing options at different price points. This provides more housing choices for a greater number of Calgarians.”
