Calgary Co-Op Closing Two Northwest Locations
Calgary Co-Op will close two of its grocery stores in the city’s northwest quadrant in March.
The co-operative has confirmed that it will shutter its Hamptons and Sage Hill locations. The Hamptons Wine Spirit Beer and Cannabis locations will also be shuttered.
The closures are slated for March 28. Calgary Co-Op has pledged to support its affected unionized employees but has not provided details.
A Co-Op spokesperson told Daily Hive that the decision resulted from “evolving economic and market conditions.”
“While we never want to close a food store location, we do need to meet our members where they are at, and where Calgary Co-op’s unique suite of products and services will be most meaningful and profitable,” the spokesperson told Daily Hive.
Although grocery stores are in demand, some other big-box grocer across Canada have struggled in certain submarkets due to changing economic condition and market dynamics due to changing economic and market conditions in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grocers of all sizes are also grappling with price increases and the effects of the Canada-U.S. trade war.
