Chard’s Proposed North Van Hotel-MF Project Advances
Chard Development’s proposed hotel and multi-family project in North Vancouver has advanced to the public-hearing stage, the North Shore News reported.
The Vancouver-based developer’s plan includes a 37-storey rental tower, one of the tallest on the North Shore, along with a 12-storey hotel, located on Capilano Road near Marine Drive. District of North Vancouver council narrowly approved the move to a public hearing, with opposition from Mayor Mike Little and councillors Lisa Muri and Betty Forbes over concerns about the project’s height.
(The community of North Vancouver has two governing bodies covering respective geographic areas: The City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver. The proposed project is located within the District of North Vancouver.)
The proposed development would replace the current Best Western and Econo Lodge sites, bringing 478 rental units, including 48 below-market units, and 171 hotel rooms, as well as commercial space, improved road infrastructure, and enhanced public areas. The public hearing is tentatively scheduled for November 19.
Council supporters highlighted the project’s benefits, including a $16-million partnership with the YWCA to provide 18 subsidized family units, $15 million in street improvements, and nearly $9 million in infrastructure upgrades, the News reported..
Public feedback has reflected mixed opinions, with support for added rental housing and economic growth but concerns about density and the tower’s height above 30 storeys.
