City Breaks Ground on New Glenmore Arena
The City of Calgary has broken ground on a new twin-arena development project in the southwest quadrant.
The facility is set to replace the aging Stu Peppard Arena. With an expected completion date in 2027, the $85.6- million project marks a significant step in addressing Calgary’s increasing demand for ice rinks.
It remains to be seen whether one of the rinks will retain the Stu Peppard name. The late Peppard was a long-time minor hockey administrator and devout supporter of the Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
Located in the heart of Glenmore Athletic Park, the new facility will feature two ice surfaces, modern amenities, and a range of community spaces — a major upgrade from the single-sheet arena that has served Calgarians since 1962.
“Building a new, state-of-the-art facility like the Glenmore Twin Arena is a critical investment in Calgary’s future,” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “As our city continues to grow, we must prioritise recreational infrastructure to meet the needs of all Calgarians.
“This new arena will provide the opportunities for all ages and abilities to stay active, connected, and engaged in the communities they call home.”
Designed to enhance the user and spectator experience, the facility will include seating for 1,000 in one rink and 300 in the second. A ground-floor lobby will offer seating areas, accessible washrooms, and convenient access to team and officials’ rooms. The second floor, accessible by elevator and stairs, will feature a central spectator concourse connecting the two rinks, along with washrooms, a snack bar, and a suite of support spaces that include a classroom, conference and multi-use rooms, and warm-up area.
The arena is being constructed with sustainability in mind and is targeting a LEED Gold designation.
“The new Glenmore Twin Arena will provide the sport community with new, modern amenities and improved accessibility,” added Kerensa Swanson Fromherz, the city’s director of public services delivery.
“With two rinks replacing the single sheet, there will be more space for teams and athletes to train, practise and compete.”
The project is part of the City’s Revised Capital Investment Strategy, with funding contributions from several partners, including Hockey Calgary.
“Hockey Calgary is thrilled that construction of the new Glenmore Twin Arena is here,” said Kevin Kobelka, executive-director of Hockey Calgary. “Growth of hockey in the Calgary area continues to be strong in both the male and female categories, and we’re confident the addition of this facility will help us grow the great game of hockey and other ice sports in Calgary.”
The new facility is slated to open in 2027.
