Calgary City Council Approves Broad Rezoning Plan
Calgary city council has narrowly approved a sweeping rezoning plan that allows for higher-density residential projects.
Councillors voted 9-6 in favour of new regulations Tuesday night after they received about 40 amendments, The Calgary Herald reported. The decision has widespread implications for future rental-housing and condominium developments throughout the city.
The approval came after council spent much of Tuesday debating the amendments, which were introduced Monday evening. The revised rules, in the form of a bylaw, will enable the city to reorganize zones across the city.
The amendments resulted after a 12-day public hearing that saw a record 736 Calgarians discuss the pros and cons of the blanket rezoning effort, according to the Herald.
As a result of council’s approval, the city will now permit the rezoning of all residential areas that had only allowed for single or semi-detached homes.
The Calgary Real Estate Board opposed the rezoning plan.
