City of Surrey, TransLink Partner on Newton 2.2M-SF Master Development Plan
The City of Surrey and TransLink have unveiled a 2.2-million-square-foot master development plan for Newton Town Centre that will guide transit-oriented growth on public lands over the next 30 years.
The plan involves the redevelopment of Newton Town Centre mall and covers approximately 40 acres—35 owned by the city and five owned by TransLink—along King George Boulevard near 72md Avenue. The plan envisions more than 2,200 residential units housing approximately 4,000 residents, alongside more than 150,000 square feet of retail space, a new community centre funded by the city, and 15.7 acres of parks and open space.
The city said the development concept aligns with its Newton Centre Plan adopted in 2020 and incorporates the proposed King George Boulevard Bus Rapid Transit route, including a nearby station.
“We’re excited to share the Newton Centre Master Development Plan—a long-term vision to transform underutilized public lands into a vibrant, transit-oriented community at the heart of Newton. This plan reflects years of community planning and will bring a mix of new homes, civic amenities, and local commercial spaces to the neighbourhood, supported by significant public investment,” said Bill Aujla, president and CEO of Surrey City Development Corporation.
Kevin Quinn, CEO of TransLink, said the initiative highlights how transit-oriented real estate development can support housing and services while generating revenue.
Local business groups have welcomed the project.
“The Newton [Business Improvement Association] supports the redevelopment of the Newton Town Centre,” said Philip Aguirre, the association’s executive-director. “It’s an exciting time when projects like these are visioned out for the future. Newton has a vibrant future and this is a stepping stone toward starting the revitalization of the town centre.”
