Costco Plans to Open Business Centre Store in New Westminster

Costco Wholesale is set to introduce Metro Vancouver’s first Costco Business Centre store in New Westminster, B.C.

The City of New Westminster issued a development permit in February for the new store at 1085 Tanaka Court in the Queensborough district, the Daily Hive reported while citing documents obtained through a Freedom of Information request.

Unlike standard Costco warehouses, which cater to everyday shoppers, Costco Business Centres are designed to serve business customers with bulk and specialized products.

The site spans approximately 13 acres and includes a warehouse building originally constructed for home-improvement retailer Lowe’s in 2011.

The Lowe’s store operated until 2023 before local developer Beedie acquired the property for $74 million in June 2024. Plans for the new Costco Business Centre involve repurposing the existing structure, including the removal of the former garden centre’s roofing and other exterior modifications, according to the Daily Hive. The facility will have a floor area of about 142,400 square feet.

Parking lot adjustments are also part of the project.

Metro Vancouver currently has 14 conventional Costco locations. U.S.-headquartered Costco operates only six other Business Centres in Canada, including single locations in Edmonton, the Greater Toronto Area; St. Catharines, Ont.; Ottawa, and two in Montreal.

There is no confirmed opening date for the New Westminster store, according to the Daily Hive.
