Deep Sky Completes World’s First Carbon-removal Centre in Innisfail
Deep Sky has completed construction on its Alpha carbon-removal facility in Innisfail, Alta.
The company says the project is the world’s first carbon-removal and commercialization centre.
Deep Sky completed the project, from land lease to construction completion, in less than a year.
“Today marks a pivotal moment for the carbon-removal industry,” said Alex Petre, Deep Sky’s CEO. “Completing construction of Deep Sky Alpha in under a year proves that we can build critical climate infrastructure at the pace and scale required by the climate crisis.”
Multiple direct-air-capture (DAC) units located on the site are being commissioned with carbon-removal operations set to begin this summer.
Deep Sky expects the first tonnes of carbon-removal credits to be generated by year-end 2025.
BBA, a leading firm specializing in in energy-transition projects, partnered on the engineering and design with Montreal-based Deep Sky.
Deep Sky said the completion builds on the firm’s recent $40-million grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and carbon removal credit purchase agreements with founding buyers Microsoft, Royal Bank of Canada, and Rubicon Carbon.
