Edmonton’s Ice District Event Park Development Gets Green Light
Edmonton city council has approved a master agreement for a new event park in the Ice District, CBC reported.
The decision passed in a 9–4 vote, clearing the way for the Edmonton Oilers’ ownership group to move forward with the project.
The $408.2-million plan ties the event park to other commitments, including building 2,500 housing units and demolishing the Coliseum, the former home of the Oilers before Rogers Place arena became the district’s centrepiece.
Funding for the package will be shared by the City of Edmonton, the province and OEG Sports and Entertainment, the company that owns the National Hockey League club, CBC reported.
The projects are connected through the Capital City Downtown Community Revitalization Levy, a financing tool that council extended in June for another decade to help fund infrastructure developments in the city.
