Fairmont, Truman to Develop New Hotel in Calgary
Fairmont Hotels & Resorts and local developer Truman have partnered on a new mixed-use luxury hotel and branded residences project in Calgary.
The companies did not specify the location of the proposed development site but said it is situated in the city’s greater downtown near Stampede Park. Truman is again seeking to capitalize on the benefits of the $500-million expansion of the BMO Centre, which was built in 2024 on the Stampede grounds and ranks as the largest convention facility in Western Canada.
Truman now has four projects on and around the Stampede grounds.
The company’s latest proposed development is slated to include a 225-room Fairmont hotel and 100 branded residences, along with spa and wellness facilities and extensive meeting and event space, with an anticipated opening in the fourth quarter of 2031.
Fairmont said the project reflects its long-term commitment to Calgary and strengthens its presence in Western Canada, where it already operates the 112-year-old Fairmont Palliser, which arguably ranks as the city’s top hotel.
“We are honoured to play a role in this incredible new property at such a pivotal moment in Calgary’s development,” said Omer Acar, Fairmont’s CEO. “Adding a second property in this flourishing city where the beloved Fairmont Palliser currently resides will be a significant achievement, and reinforces Fairmont’s leadership position in Western Canada, as well as strengthens our long-term brand commitment to Calgary as a destination.
“Fairmont Calgary will become an exciting new social hub for the local community, hotel guests and residents alike, blending both tradition and modernity.”
Design concepts for the project are expected to be announced and regulatory approvals initiated in the first quarter of 2026. The development team said the project will generate construction employment and permanent hospitality jobs once complete.
Truman said the partnership underscores confidence in Calgary’s long-term growth and economic prospects.
“This investment underscores our shared confidence in Calgary’s future,” said George Trutina, president of Truman. “Fairmont Calgary will contribute meaningfully to the city’s economy, vibrancy, and its growing reputation as a global destination for business, tourism, and luxury living,”
The partnership comes after Truman recently broke ground on new $330-million Marriott Autograph Collection convention-hotel project at Stampede Park.
The 320-room Marriott Autograph Collection development will become the first hotel at historic Stampede Park, located just off downtown in the Beltline district. Slated for completion in 2028, the hotel will cater to people attending conferences at the expanded BMO Centre.
Truman is collaborating on the project with the Calgary Stampede, city-owned Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and Marriott International, which will manage the 13-storey hotel.
Truman acquired an 85,000-square-foot land parcel for the hotel from CMLC in 2025 through a land swap. The city will use the parcel that it received from Truman as part of a new arena for the NHL’s Calgary Flames and other major teams that will call it home.
The Autograph Collection is one of three hotels at and near Stampede Park on which Truman, joint-venture partner Louson and Marriott are partnering as part of a $1.47-billion investment.
The other two, branded as W Calgary and JW Marriott Calgary, will rise on a site adjacent to the Stampede grounds at 15th Avenue S.E. and Macleod Trail S.E. and are slated to open in 2029 and 2030, respectively. The two proposed venues are going through the regulatory-approval process.
