Feds, City Partner on Building 3,000 Mixed-Income Homes in Ottawa

The federal government and the City of Ottawa have partnered to build up to 3,000 new mixed-income and affordable homes, with the first eight approved projects set to deliver more than 1,100 rental units.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the projects, approved through Build Canada Homes, exceed initial targets by nearly 10%. More than 90% of the developments will provide affordable rental housing, with most scheduled to begin construction before year-end.

The developments include projects led by non-profit and private-sector partners at sites across Ottawa, including Beausoleil Drive, Jockvale Road, Regina Street and Arlington Avenue.

To support construction, Ottawa will also benefit from the recently announced new federal-provincial agreement with Ontario that cuts municipal development charges in half for three years,” said the federal government. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government said this move could reduce the cost of building a two-bedroom apartment in Ottawa by more than $15,000.

“Canadians gave our government a clear mandate to build a stronger country – one where people are empowered with more opportunities, lower costs, safer communities, and homes you can afford,” said Carney. “We’re working in partnership with the City of Ottawa to deliver on that promise – fast-tracking projects that build thousands of new affordable homes.”

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said the city is building more homes, including non-market units, and constructing them faster through its Housing Action Plan.

Adam Jacobs, Colliers’ head of Canadian research, previously told Connect that the 50% reduction in development-cost charges will have a more immediate impact than others designed to boost long-term supply in Ontario and across the country.
