Feds Invest $28M in Halifax Interchange’s Wastewater Infra
The federal government is investing $28 million in wastewater infrastructure tied to the Windsor Street Exchange redevelopment project in Halifax.
The upgrades are intended to support additional housing development by expanding system capacity, while also improving infrastructure reliability in a key transportation corridor, said federal officials.
The funding is part of the newly launched Build Communities Strong Fund, a $51-billion, 10-year federal program aimed at accelerating infrastructure development across Canada. The fund will support projects in areas including housing, transportation, water systems, healthcare, education, and climate adaptation, with additional contributions expected from provincial, municipal, territorial, and private partners.
The Windsor Street Exchange project is among 13 initial projects receiving a combined $300 million in federal funding through the program’s direct-delivery stream.
Led by the Halifax Regional Municipality, Phase 2 of the redevelopment includes upgrades by Halifax Water to increase wastewater collection capacity in the area. The work involves replacing a section of the existing combined sewer along Kempt Road, including predesign, design, tendering, and construction, as well as installing larger sanitary and stormwater pipes.
