Feds Invest $46M in 21 Edmonton Multi-Res Projects
The federal government is investing $46 million to build and renew 1,431 homes across 21 multi-residential housing projects in Edmonton.
Edmonton Centre MP Randy Boissonnault announced the funding on behalf of Housing Minister Nathaniel Erskine-Smith at Central Village, a 42-unit apartment building owned by Civida. The property received $24,000 through the Canada Greener Affordable Housing (CGAH) program.
“The market alone won’t deliver the housing affordability we need,” said Erskine-Smith in a news release. “These projects represent major progress in returning a strong federal role to affordable and non-market housing. It’s now time to double down on that commitment.”
The funding includes $37 million in contributions and loans through the Affordable Housing Fund (AHF) to create 124 units across two projects, and nearly $9 million through CGAH to upgrade 1,307 units in 19 projects. The initiatives, part of the National Housing Strategy, aim to support Edmonton’s most vulnerable populations.
“As an affordable housing provider, Civida appreciates the federal government’s commitment to expanding and strengthening affordable housing in Edmonton,” said Gord Johnston, the company’s CEO.
“With support from the [AHF] and [CGAH], Civida, along with other housing providers, is better positioned to renew and maintain existing units, preserving access to safe, affordable housing for those who need it most for decades to come.”
