Feds Investing $1.5B in Two New Ottawa Labs

The federal government is investing $1.5 billion to develop two new laboratories in Ottawa.

Both facilities will be located on the National Research Council of Canada’s main campus.

According to a government news release, a site has been selected and contracts have been awarded for the $1-billion TerraCanada National Capital Area (TerraCanada NCA) project. Meanwhile, a preliminary schematic design has been completed for the $500-million Transportation Safety and Technology Science (TSTS) project.

Dallas-based AECOM Canadian subsidiary’s architecture and technical services arms, under a joint-venture, have been awarded a $59.5-million contract for the TerraCanada NCA facility’s design services. Frankfurt-based ECB has received a $78.8-million base contract for base construction services.

The TSTS project includes the relocation of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada’s laboratory and head office. The facility will house about 260 NRC and TSB employees and scientists.

The TSTS project’s architectural and engineering services contract was awarded to Vancouver-based A49 and San Carlos, Calif.-based B&H, in a joint-venture, in 2022. A preliminary schematic design has been completed.

The federal government expects to issue a request for proposals on the TSTS project through the CanadaBuys later this year.
