Garage Sports Bar Gets New Home
Calgary’s Garage Sports Bar has found a new home following the closure of Eau Claire Market.
The long-time Eau Claire staple has reopened a few downtown blocks away in Bow Valley Square, a mixed-use property that includes four office towers along with retail and hospitality spaces.
Charlie Mendelman, who has owned the Garage since 1995, sought a new location in advance of the Eau Claire Market shutdown in May, the Calgary Herald reported. The former market site is slated to become the downtown terminus for the future Green Line light-rapid-transit system.
Several mixed-use projects are slated to be developed around the new station.
Foosball and pool tables and other amenities prevalent at the original Garage can also be found in the new digs. Nadia Delegarde, the Garage’s long-time general manager, told the Herald that she expects the new location to be busier the Eau Claire site during lunchtime and happy hour.
Mendelman told the Herald that the location was difficult to find and credited Matthew Russell, Oxford’s director of national urban retail leasing, with helping to bring the deal together.
The Garage owner also praised Calgary-based Korr Design for its involvement in the project and city councillor Kerry Wong for his input.
