Global Container Seeks to Fast-Track Deltaport Terminal Expansion

Global Container Terminals (GCT) is seeking to fast-track its Deltaport Berth 4 (DP4) expansion project in Delta, B.C.

GCT, the port’s operator, has formally applied to the new federal Major Projects Office, which collaborates with Ottawa to approve infrastructure that is considered nationally important within two years. Deltaport ranks among Canada’s largest container-shipping terminals.

GCT is also urging the Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government to place DP4 on the Projects of National Interest List, citing its role in strengthening supply chains, attracting private-sector investment, and supporting Canada’s position as a global trade leader.

“Prime Minister Carney has set a clear direction for Canada: Invest in infrastructure that unlocks private capital, drives innovation, and positions our country for long-term success,” said Eric Waltz, President and CEO of GCT. “Adding DP4 to the Projects of National Interest List would demonstrate federal leadership and provide the certainty we need to advance one of the most important private-sector-led trade infrastructure investments in Canada.”

The DP4 expansion at Roberts Bank would boost Canada’s container handling capacity by more than 2 million TEUs, or 20-foot-equivalent units, create about 10,000 jobs during construction and operations, and contribute billions of dollars to GDP growth, said GCT. The project also includes electrification, shore-power deployment, habitat offsets, and a Net-Zero commitment.

“This government has made it clear that Canada must compete to win global investment,” Waltz said. “DP4 represents exactly the type of high-impact, low-risk infrastructure project the Prime Minister has called for – private-sector investment, partnering with [a] public-sector port authority, environmentally responsible, and nationally strategic.”

The Carney government must ensure that Canada has the infrastructure necessary to compete globally, said Waltz, adding that the country’s position as a Pacific gateway is critical to the national economy and trade relationships.

“Adding DP4 to the list is the right step forward,” he said.
