Goodyear Investing $575M in Napanee Tire Plant Expansion
Goodyear is investing $575 million to expand its tire manufacturing plant in Napanee, Ont.
Akron, Ohio-based Goodyear is making the investment through its Canadian subsidiary. Napanee is located in southeastern Ontario, about 45 kilometres west of Kingston.
The federal government will provide $44.3 million through its Strategic Innovation Fund. Meanwhile, the province will furnish $20 million to support the implementation of innovative technologies, skills-training programs and other components.
And, the Town of Greater Napanee, the Township of Stone Mills and the County of Lennox and Addington will provide approximately $2 million in incentives over four years.
The plant is designed to serve the electric-vehicle and all-terrain markets.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the modernization effort will create manufacturing jobs, grow Canada’s EV industry and use modern technology to keep the air clean.
“It’s another vote of confidence in Canada’s auto sector workers,” said Trudeau in a news release.
The project will create 200 new full-time highly skilled manufacturing jobs by 2027 and bring the facility’s total employee count to about 1,000, according to a Goodyear news release. The expansion will also reduce the plant’s emissions by 10% by 2030 and get the facility to net-zero by 2040.
“Our investments include facility expansion, additional modernization, new state-of-the-art equipment, as well as new technology,” said Mark Stewart, Goodyear’s president and CEO, during a news conference.
The expansion will occur at the plant’s existing site. Construction has already begun and is expected to conclude in the summer of 2027.
