Halifax Zoning Changes Permit More MF Housing
The Halifax Regional Municipality’s governing council has approved zoning changes that will allow for more multi-family residential units on individual properties.
Council support was unanimous, CBC reported.
The zoning changes allow for up to eight units on a lot in most residential areas of the urban core, according to CBC. Meanwhile, taller buildings of up to seven or 10 storeys will be permitted on transit routes.
The zoning changes are tied to $79 million that the HRM received through the federal government’s Housing Accelerator Fund. Under HAF agreements, municipalities are required to revise zoning rules where necessary to accommodate more housing.
The HRM includes Halifax, its twin city Dartmouth and surrounding jurisdictions in the region.
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation administers HAF projects.
