Japan’s Uniqlo Opens First Calgary Store
Japanese clothing retailer Uniqlo has opened its first Calgary store in Chinook Centre.
A grand opening was held Friday in the Cadillac Fairview-owned mall. The 15,000-square location is Uniqlo’s second in Alberta.
The chain entered the Alberta market with its West Edmonton Mall store opening in 2019. Friday’s opening was Uniqlo’s second in Canada this year.
In June, the retailer opened a 15,000-sf store in Cadillac Fairview’s Rideau Centre in downtown Ottawa. Uniqlo now has 18 Canadian locations.
According to Reuters, the new Calgary and Ottawa stores provide self-checkout kiosks, in-store pickup and free clothing alterations.
Parent company Fast Retailing plans to have 200 Uniqlo stores in North America by 2027, Reuters reported. To achieve its goal, Fast Company aims to open 20 to 30 stores annually in the region.
Uniqlo has approximately 2,400 worldwide stores. The chain opened its first location in 1984 in Hiroshima.
