Jennifer Shum, HOOPP

Jennifer Shum is senior managing director of structured and private credit at the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP), one of Canada’s largest institutional commercial real estate investors

She leads a team focused on global investments in structured products and private credit, playing a pivotal role in expanding Toronto-based HOOPP’s credit portfolio across diverse asset classes. Since joining HOOPP in 2012, Shum has driven growth in asset investing and origination, with a focus on areas such as commercial and residential mortgages, consumer credit, private credit, transportation debt, and digital technology assets.

Shum began her career as a fixed-income trader at Goldman Sachs, working in New York and other international offices. She then advanced to senior leadership roles specializing in capital markets, asset securitization, and syndication. Her previous positions include vice-president and head of capital markets and syndication at Otéra Capital, part of the the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, and managing director and group head of commercial mortgage-backed securities and securitization trading at TD Securities.

Shum was received an Elite Woman 2024 Award from Benefits and Pensions Monitor. She also serves as a speaker at industry events in Canada and the U.S., and helps women advance their careers in commercial real estate and finance.

Throughout her career, she has served on multiple boards, contributing her expertise to the financial and asset management sectors.

Shum holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and Leslie Wong Fellowship from the University of British Columbia. She is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and holds the Institute of Corporate Directors designation (ICD.D).
