Kruger Completes New Light Dry Crepe Tissue Plant

Kruger Products has completed construction on a new light dry crepe (LDC) tissue plant in Sherbrooke, Que., marking the completion of a $377.5-million expansion project.

Built over three years on a site next to Kruger’s existing through-air-dry (TAD) facility, the new plant features a double-wide tissue machine with LDC technology and two new converting lines—one for facial tissue at the new facility and another for bathroom tissue at the TAD plant.

The LDC machine adds 60,000 metric tonnes of annual capacity, nearly doubling production at the Sherbrooke Operational Centre and bringing total output to more than 130,000 metric tonnes per year. The industrial complex in the city’s Brompton borough produces well-known brands such as Cashmere UltraLuxe, Scotties Ultra Soft, and SpongeTowels Ultra Pro.

“This second plant fulfills our vision to make Sherbrooke a major manufacturing hub in North America of premium-quality tissue products,” said Michel Manseau, senior vice-president and general manager of Kruger’s Canadian consumer business.

The project created 205 direct jobs, boosting total new hires at the centre to 378 since 2020. Kruger said the company has invested nearly $1 billion in the Sherbrooke region, a secondary market, since 2018. The expansion received $165 million in loans from Investissement Québec, the province’s investment arm.
