Loblaw Opens Second No Frills Small-format Store in Toronto

Loblaw has opened its second No Frills small-format store in Toronto.

The new supermarket is located downtown at 42 Hanna Avenue in the Liberty Village district.

“We know Torontonians are looking for convenience and low prices, but that sometimes those are trade-offs in the downtown core,” said Melanie Singh, president of hard discount for Brampton, Ont.-based Loblaw.

“It was important for us that customers can do a full grocery shop at this location, and still take advantage of the unbeatable prices they expect from No Frills.”

The opening comes after Loblaw opened its first compact No Frills store at the corner of King and Shaw streets, also situated downtown, at the end of May.

On average small-format No Frills stores comprise 10,000 square feet or less.

The two No Frills small-format openings are part of Loblaw’s plan to launch 40 new stores this year. Richard Dufresne, CFO for Loblaw, said previously that the expansion plan is on track.

Loblaw plans to invest more than $2 billion in the expansion effort while opening the 40 new stores and upgrading approximately 700 existing locations across Canada.

Loblaw is Canada’s largest grocery-store owner and operator. Its chains include Loblaws, No Frills, T&T and Real Canadian Superstore, The company also owns and operates the Shoppers Drug Mart store network and PC Financial.
