Loblaw to Develop Large Superstore in Taza’s Buffalo Run
A major retail development is coming to one of Canada’s largest First Nation-led projects.
Taza Development Corporation and Loblaw have announced plans to bring a Real Canadian Superstore to the Buffalo Run area of Taza Park, a 1,200-acre, mixed-use development located on Tsuut’ina Nation lands just west of Calgary.
“This is our first-ever Real Canadian Superstore in collaboration with an Indigenous community in Alberta,” said Jonathan Carroll, senior vice-president of Superstore operations. “Taza is where culture, opportunity and community come together in a meaningful way.”
Construction on the new location is expected to begin in 2025, with an opening slated for 2026. The Superstore will provide a wide range of groceries, household goods, and general merchandise, complementing the existing retail offerings at the adjacent Shops at Buffalo Run.
Taza, a partnership between Tsuut’ina Nation and Canderel, has been envisioned as a regional hub blending culture, commerce, and community. Buffalo Run is one of three distinct village areas within Taza, alongside Taza Park and the Crossing. Upon completion, the overall development is expected to feature about 700,000 square feet of retail space, with Buffalo Run alone offering 390 acres of retail, dining, and recreation opportunities.
Since its inception, Taza has seen the launch of about 50 businesses across Buffalo Run and Taza Park, with more developments expected to be announced in the coming months.
The new Superstore is also anticipated to generate employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases, further supporting economic growth within the Tsuut’ina Nation and surrounding region.
According to multiple reports, the Taza Superstore will comprise 100,000 square feet, which is larger than a typical Superstore. Construction is slated to start in 2025 with completion expected in 2026.
Loblaw is investing in 80 news stores in 2025 as part of a $2.2-billion investment, the announced previously.
