Long-delayed Summerside Resort Slated to Open in 2027

A long-stalled resort development in Summerside, P.E.I., is moving forward with plans to open in two years following decades of setbacks, CBC reported.

Developer Sean Liu has applied to city council for approval to invest an additional $80 million into completing the Ocean View Resort project, which includes a 96-room hotel, a redeveloped 27-hole golf course, and a new 53-unit condominium building. The property, located on 50 acres off MacKenzie Drive, has remained closed since work first began in 1991 under a previous owner.

“Now that we’re started, we’re not stopping as long as we get permits and approvals,” Nicolle Morrison, a Century 21 real estate broker who represents the developer, told CBC.

If the latest development application is approved by June, the project is expected to be finished and operational by spring 2027. Construction has already resumed on the golf course, which is being redesigned by Canadian architect Graham Cooke. Plans also include the addition of a driving range and clubhouse.

The resort’s history includes a string of failed ownerships, foreclosures, and unfulfilled openings. Liu purchased the site in 2005, but until now, the project had seen little visible progress.

Many people in the community are cautiously optimistic, according to CBC.

“They’re looking forward to it,” Morrison told CBC. “They don’t believe it, but they should start to believe because it’s happening,” Morrison told the media outlet.

Some residents have expressed concern that the addition of the condo development could further delay completion of the resort and increase local traffic.

City officials are currently reviewing the proposal, which has been split into two separate applications: one for the resort and golf course, and another for the residential units. A final decision is expected in June.
