Musqueam to Partner in River Rock Casino Acquisition

The Musqueam Indian Band has agreed to partner with Snuneymuxw First Nation on its recently announced purchase of the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, B.C., from Great Canadian Entertainment.

“We thank Snuneymuxw First Nation for respecting our traditional territories and following our shared cultural protocols by approaching us about a partnership to acquire River Rock,” said Musqueam Chief Wayne Sparrow. “This is an example of Nations working together, not against each other, building economic prosperity for both our communities that will support more jobs and opportunities for our band members.”

Musqueam owns the land beneath River Rock, where the current lease expires in December 2041. Great Canadian Entertainment has been accepting bids for the business and gaming licence, and Musqueam has explored acquisition opportunities over the past nine months through Musqueam Capital Corporation. River Rock is among B.C.’s largest casinos in both attendance and revenue.

In late September, Snuneymuxw approached Musqueam regarding its intention to acquire River Rock. Musqueam Council voted to support the agreement in principle.

Musqueam council will consult with band members as partnership details are finalized.
