New $28M Soccer Dome Opens in Southeast Calgary
A new city-owned soccer dome has opened in southeast Calgary.
The $28-million structure is known as the Calgary Soccer Centre Dome. It markets the partial redevelopment of the existing four-field Calgary Soccer Centre that previously comprised only outdoor playing surfaces.
Three outdoor fields with artificial turf remain on the site.
The air-supported dome houses a new artificial-turf field. The former outdoor field previously comprised natural turf.
A new amenity building with eight dressing rooms, one referees changing room, a universal washroom and additional staff spaces was also constructed. In addition, the city upgraded the centre’s parking lot and storm-water management system.
Further parking-lot upgrades are underway and expected to be completed this summer.
The dome offers year-round training and the potential for enhanced player development. Calgary’s cold winters limit playing and training opportunities for players who aspire to play professionally.
“The continuing joint efforts between the various soccer associations and government are playing a vital role in making the sport we love more accessible to everyone in this city and this province.”
The Alberta government provided $3.6 million in funding through its Municipal Sustainability Initiative.
“This project will provide Calgarians with year-round opportunities to come together as a community and stay active,” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek.
The city aims to build a total of 13 indoor sports fields by 2050 through its GamePLAN Making Waves program.
“This dome is just the beginning,” said Heather Johnson, the city’s director of recreational and social programs.
