New Costco Store to Open in Winnipeg
Costco is preparing to open a new store in Winnipeg’s Westport mixed-use development in late 2025.
Westport is a 1-million-square foot project located near Red River Exhibition Park on the city’s west side. The development is owned by a joint-venture led by Shindico Realty, a Winnipeg-based commercial real estate owner, manager, developer and builder.
The future 166,984-square-foot store Costco store is currently under construction and will offer the same grocery and household products that the U.S. retail giant is known for.
“We’re very excited to have Costco join our Westport development,” said Sandy Shindleman, founder and chairman of Shindico. “They will be a great amenity for all of western Manitoba and will spur more retail development at Westport.”
The new store will be Costco’s fourth location in Winnipeg, serving the city’s western residents and surrounding areas. It will complement other retail, hotels, restaurants, offices, warehouses, and mostly rental multi-family housing on the 70-acre Westport site.
Situated near the intersection of the Perimeter Highway and Portage Avenue, Westport is positioned within a hub of sporting and recreational facilities. Along with the 460-acre Red River Exhibition Park, the Assiniboia Downs horseracing track and the Hockey for All Centre, which serves as the practice facility for the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets and the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose, are located nearby.
Founded in 1975, Shindico is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Shindico ranks as one of Manitoba’s largest privately owned commercial real estate firms, focusing its activities in Winnipeg and the surrounding area.. The company’s diverse portfolio includes shopping centres, office buildings, industrial parks, and mixed-use developments.
Costco has not confirmed an exact opening date for the store. But it is expected to open before the Christmas shopping season.
